Visit to Styal Mill

We were shown how the children apprentices would have lived in the Apprentice house.
They had a special school room for the weekend when they weren't working at the mill itself. All the children would have used slates to write on.
The teacher showed us how the lessons would have been. The dormitories would have to be kept clean. The children had to sweep up with a broom.

Would you have liked to sleep all together in beds like these? The mattresses were stuffed with straw, which was only changed twice a year! They would have hung up herbs to disguise the smell in the room.
